RC Deportivo

The history of Real Club Deportivo is filled with emotions, joys, and sorrows, throughout its more than 100-year history. Football arrived in the city of A Coruña by sea in the late 19th century, coming from the United Kingdom, and at the beginning of the new century, it began to be organized by a man from Arousa, José María Abalo Abad.

In March 1904, the first "serious" football match played in A Coruña took place in the Corralón de La Gaiteira. After Abalo taught his teammates in the old bullring, they moved to the new venue so that a combined team from A Coruña, with the rather grand name of "Corunna," could face the crew of the English ship "Dilligent." This laid the foundation for this new sport to take permanent root in the city.

The history of RC Deportivo, although not formally established until January 9, 1907, dates back to 1906, the year in which the Club Deportivo de la Sala Calvet, a prestigious gymnasium on Galera Street in the heart of the city, began operating with various friendly matches. Its first president was Luis Cornide, and its initial team consisted of Salvador Fojón, Venancio Deus, Juan Long, Ángel Rodríguez, Manuel Álvarez, Daniel Aler, Juan Manuel López, Félix de Paz, Virgilio Rodríguez, Pedro Martínez Urioste, and José Rodríguez. It was a club dedicated to a new sport, considered "exotic" by the young people of the time.

On March 11, 1907, the civil governor, Luis Moyano, approved the statutes and regulations of the new society. A year and a half later, His Majesty King Alfonso XIII granted the Club the title of "Real" (Royal), while also accepting the honorary presidency of what had become the Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña.

Football fever had already taken hold throughout the city, which meant that, coinciding with the club's "royal" christening, the first RC Deportivo stadium, Riazor Park, was inaugurated that same year with a match against Fortuna de Vigo.

This first sports complex covered 18,000 square meters and its stands could accommodate 6,000 fans. It was conceived and built by Federico Fernández Amor-Calvet. The old Riazor Park ground was located on the site now occupied by the Las Esclavas School. Laureano Martínez was the president of Deportivo at that time, and the team that inaugurated the stadium consisted of Martínez; Long, Ancos; De Llano, Martínez, Blanco Rajoy; Rodríguez, Álvarez, Virgilio, De Paz, and Portela.

Shortly afterwards, Deportivo won the first official title in its history, the 1912 Copa España. The blue and whites beat Vigo FC to win a trophy organized by the Spanish Federation of Football Clubs, which over time fell into oblivion until a journalistic investigation and the preservation of the cup by the Club led the RFEF to recognize its official status at the beginning of 2023, more than a century after it was contested.
